After the revelations from Rayn and Marley, our hopes were pinned on twenty-six-year-old Tayla Kenzie â the only one in the mix from the original matches.
On Thursday morning, Zara and I headed to the coast to a village called Little Fraisby, near the small seaside town of Fellingthorpe. Taylaâs father had some health and mobility challenges, so she lived with her parents, helping her mother care for her father. They had a pretty bungalow with a small but beautifully maintained back garden with views of the North Sea beyond.
The sea breeze took the edge off the mugginess that had been building across the week, making for pleasant filming conditions.
While I hadnât considered Tayla to be a perfect match for Barney, I had at least met her and knew that her reasons for taking part were genuine. She loved the countryside and had been raised on a farm until ill health meant her father needed to sell up. She worked in a farm shop and was genuinely looking for love. No desire to be famous and definitely no pig phobias.
My concerns for the match hadnât therefore been a lack of shared interests or even her looks â she was still blonde, after all, even if her hair was short and her make-up natural. Iâd been worried about the personality match â or lack of it. Tayla was shy, quiet, lacking in self-confidence and perhaps a little too serious for Barney, who was none of those things. Last time I met her, Iâd challenged her on her lack of self-confidence and how that tallied with appearing on television â usually the domain of those brimming with confidence â but she said it was something she was trying hard to work on and she saw this as a way of challenging herself.
As Barneyâs opposite, Tayla might complement him or it might be a disaster, but I still stood by her being the best chance of a love match out of the original three.
Filming with Tayla couldnât have been more different to our first day with Rayn. She was extremely nervous, stumbling over her words, nibbling on her nails and looking absolutely terrified. After we hit double figures on the takes to get her introduction right, Matt and I were concerned she might break down in tears and suggested a time-out. I admired her for wanting to push herself out of her comfort zone to build her confidence, but suspected this might have been a step too far.
Tayla went into the bungalow with the three family members and friends we were filming later that day: her mother, the manager at the farm shop where she worked, and her sister-in-law â the person whoâd convinced her to apply. Whatever they said to her, it worked, as she emerged much calmer and we eventually had some footage we could use.
With each hour that passed, Tayla seemed more settled. She had a beautiful smile which we saw more frequently and a quick-witted sense of humour emerged. By
